The bowshock and magnetopause

Reviews of Geophysics, 1987
The explosive growth of magnetopause and bowshock research reported by Russell and Greenstadt [1983] has continued unabated through the 1983 to 1986 quadrennium. Shock research has gone far beyond the tentative exploratory work seen in the last two quadrennia: a sizable volume of collisionless shock parameter space has been explored both in careful ...

Initial ISEE Magnetometer Results: Magnetopause Observations

Space Science Reviews, 1978
The magnetic field profiles across the magnetopause obtained by the ISEE-1 and -2 spacecraft separated by only a few hundred kilometers are examined for four passes. During one of these passes the magnetosheath field was northward, during one it was slightly southward, and in two it was strongly southward.

Continuous magnetic reconnection at Earth's magnetopause

Nature, 2003
The most important process that allows solar-wind plasma to cross the magnetopause and enter Earth's magnetosphere is the merging between solar-wind and terrestrial magnetic fields of opposite sense-magnetic reconnection. It is at present not known whether reconnection can happen in a continuous fashion or whether it is always intermittent.

Ionospheric Signatures of Magnetopause Processes

1998
Whilst it is well-accepted that short-duration changes to the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) and solar wind cause high-latitude ionospheric transients observed by magnetic, optical and radar techniques, a coherent explanation of the zoo of signatures remains illusive.

Magnetopause shapes: General solutions

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1977
The problem of determining the shape of a magnetopause, namely, the tangential discontinuity separating (typically) the magnetic field of a source from external plasma, is reduced to solving an integral equation. No symmetry assumptions whatsoever are used in the derivation, consequently, realistic problems such as model shapes for the earth's ...

Transport Mechanisms at the Magnetopause

1979
Mass, momentum, and energy transferred from the solar wind and magnetosheath into the magnetosphere must cross the boundary of the earth’s magnetic field, the magnetopause. This paper reviews the possibilities for convective and diffusive transport across the boundary and discusses the dependence of such processes on the orientation of the ...

Structure of tangential discontinuities at the magnetopause: the nose of the magnetopause

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1978
Abstract Observations show that the magnetopause can sometimes be represented as a tangential discontinuity in the magnetic field. In this paper, we use a theoretical model of steady-state tangential discontinuities to analyze the microscale structure of the nose of the magnetopause.

Probing the structure of the magnetopause

Science, 2017
Magnetospheres The magnetopause is the boundary in space that separates the region dominated by Earth’s magnetic field (the magnetosphere) from the surrounding solar wind. The four spacecraft of NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission have repeatedly flown in formation through the magnetopause, measuring the properties of the plasma and magnetic

Predictability of Magnetopause Location

Understanding the dynamics and predictability of magnetopause location is crucial for space weather forecasting and the safeguarding of critical technological infrastructure. The first part of the talk surveys previous effort in development of magnetopause models that gradually involve more and more driving parameters, starting from solar wind dynamic ...
