The Recent Advances in Magnetorheological Fluids-Based Applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The magnetorheological fluids (MRF) are a generation of smart fluids with the ability to alter their variable viscosity. Moreover, the state of the MRF can be switched from the semisolid to the fluid phase and vice versa upon applying or removing the ...

MagPiezo: A Magnetogenetic Platform for Remote Activation of Endogenous Piezo1 Channels in Endothelial Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MagPiezo enables wireless activation of endogenous Piezo1 channels without genetic modification using 19 nm magnetic nanoparticles and low‐intensity magnetic fields. It generates torque forces at the piconewton scale to trigger mechanotransduction in endothelial cells, standing as a novel platform to interrogate and manipulate Piezo1 activity in vitro.

Misfit of rigid tools and interferometer subapertures on off-axis aspheric mirror segments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Rigid tools can confer advantages at certain stages of manufacturing off-axis mirror segments, but the misfit due to surface asphericity and asymmetry poses constraints on their application.

Acidic magnetorheological finishing of infrared polycrystalline materials

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2016
Chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) ZnS is an example of a polycrystalline material that is difficult to polish smoothly via the magnetorheological finishing (MRF) technique. When MRF-polished, the internal infrastructure of the material tends to manifest on the surface as millimeter-sized "pebbles," and the surface roughness observed is considerably high ...

Abrupt contraction flow of magnetorheological fluids [PDF]

open access: yes
International audienceContraction and expansion flows of magnetorheological fluids occur in a variety of smart devices. It is important therefore to learn how these flows can be controlled by means of applied magnetic fields.
