Magnetosome vesicles are present before magnetite formation, and MamA is required for their activation [PDF]
Bacterial magnetosomes are intracellular compartments that house highly ordered magnetite crystals. By using Magnetospirillum sp. AMB-1 as a model system, we show that magnetosome vesicles exist in the absence of magnetite, biomineralization of magnetite

Magnetic tests for magnetosome chains in Martian meteorite ALH84001 [PDF]
Transmission electron microscopy studies have been used to argue that magnetite crystals in carbonate from Martian meteorite ALH84001 have a composition and morphology indistinguishable from that of magnetotactic bacteria.

Abstract Deep‐sea rare earth elements and yttrium (REY)‐rich sediments have attracted considerable attention since their discovery in 2011. However, the environmental factors controlling REY enrichment remain poorly understood, largely because paleoceanographic proxies are absent in pelagic clays.

Magnetotactic bacteria, magnetosomes and their application
Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are a diverse group of microorganisms with the ability to orient and migrate along geomagnetic field lines. This unique feat is based on specific intracellular organelles, the magnetosomes, which, in most MTB, comprise nanometer-sized, membrane bound crystals of magnetic iron minerals and organized into chains via a ...

Buckling of elastic filaments by discrete magnetic moments
We study the buckling of an idealized, semiflexible filament along whose contour magnetic moments are placed. {We give analytic expressions for the critical stiffness of the filament below which it buckles due to the magnetic compression.

Recent Advances in Collective Behaviors of Micro/Nanomotor Swarms
This review describes the driving forces behind collective motion, explores the self‐organization of micro/nano swarms across zero‐dimensional (0D), one‐dimensional (1D), two‐dimensional (2D), and three‐dimensional (3D) spaces, and highlights their potential in drug delivery, environmental monitoring, and smart devices.

Time resolved 2 million year old supernova activity discovered in Earth's microfossil record
Massive stars, which terminate their evolution as core collapse supernovae, are theoretically predicted to eject more than 1E-5 solar masses of the radioisotope 60Fe. If such an event occurs sufficiently close to our solar system, traces of the supernova

Directed Navigation of Magnetotactic Bacteria via Magnetotaxis in a 3D Vasculature‐On‐A‐Chip
A perfusable vascular network is developed to investigate MTB at the single‐microorganism level. MTB is demonstrated to successfully align and navigate along the magnetic field inside the microvessels. Abstract Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), inherently motile and self‐powered, are promising biorobotic candidates for targeted anti‐cancer drug delivery ...
