Magnetosphere‐Ionosphere Interactions: A Tutorial Review
, 2013We review the basic physics of the field-aligned current (FAC) systems which transmit energy and stress between the magnetosheathmagnetosphere system, and the ionosphere-thermosphere system.

An ISEE/Whistler model of equatorial electron density in the magnetosphere
, 1992An empirical model of equatorial electron density in the magnetosphere has been developed, covering the range 2.25 < L < 8. Although the model is primarily intended for application to the local time interval {approximately}00-15 MLT and to situations in ...

An experiment designed to detect the bulk flow of cool plasma within the magnetosphere has been flown on the ATS-1 (Applications Technology Satellite) synchronous satellite. This experiment has yielded evidence for gusts of streaming positive ions in the magnetospheric equatorial plane. This directed ion flow is interpreted as the result of large-scale

The Mariner 10 observations of Mercury's miniature magnetosphere collected during its close encounters in 1974 and 1975 are reviewed. Subsequent data analysis, re-interpretation and theoretical modeling, often influenced by new results obtained regarding the Earth's magnetosphere, have greatly expanded our impressions of the structure and dynamics of ...

Magnetospheric substorms: An inner-magnetospheric modeling perspective
2002Abstract Kilovolt electrons cause satellite anomalies through surface charging and frequently interfere with the operation of geosynchronous spacecraft. The Magnetospheric Specification Model was designed to specify kilovolt electron fluxes at and near synchronous orbit, and while it has seen limited operational use, its accuracy is not high.
