Modelling of three-dimensional current systems associated with magnetospheric substorms [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 1977
Summary It is now well accepted that magnetic field perturbations associated with polar magnetic substorms can be modelled by a three-dimensional equivalent current loop involving an electrojet segment in the high-latitude ionosphere linked to the outer magnetosphere by currents flowing parallel to magnetic lines of force.

How Accurately Can We Measure the Reconnection Rate E M for the MMS Diffusion Region Event of 11 July 2017? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We investigate the accuracy with which the reconnection electric field E M can be determined from in situ plasma data. We study the magnetotail electron diffusion region observed by National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Magnetospheric ...

Observations of T Tauri Disks at Sub-AU Radii: Implications for Magnetospheric Accretion and Planet Formation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We determine inner disk sizes and temperatures for four solar-type (1-2 M$_{\odot}$) classical T Tauri stars (AS 207A, V2508 Oph, AS 205A, and PX Vul) using 2.2 $\mu$m observations from the Keck Interferometer.

The United States Magnetotelluric Array and the National Impedance Map

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract The United States Magnetotelluric Array (USMTArray) data set, collected in the years 2006–2024, consists of more than 1,700 long‐period magnetotelluric stations covering the entirety of the contiguous United States on a quasi‐regular 70 km grid.

Effects of substorms on the stormtime ring current index Dst [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2000
There has been some discussion in recent times regarding whether or not substorm expansive phase activity plays any role of importance in the formation of the stormtime ring current.

Machine Learning for Local Detection of Separators in Three‐Dimensional Magnetic Fields

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Magnetic reconnection is a major plasma phenomenon occurring in various key environments ranging from the Sun and near‐Earth space to astrophysical plasmas. While magnetic reconnection is relatively well‐understood under two‐dimensional (2D) settings, it remains challenging to characterize in three‐dimensional (3D) magnetic fields.

Corotation-driven magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling currents in Saturn’s magnetosphere and their relation to the auroras [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2003
We calculate the latitude profile of the equatorward-directed ionospheric Pedersen currents that are driven in Saturn’s ionosphere by partial corotation of the magnetospheric plasma.

Modeling magnetospheric fields in the Jupiter system

open access: yes, 2017
The various processes which generate magnetic fields within the Jupiter system are exemplary for a large class of similar processes occurring at other planets in the solar system, but also around extrasolar planets.

Terrestrial Analogs to Titan for Geophysical Research

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Saturn's moon Titan exhibits remarkable parallels to the Earth in many geophysical and geological processes not found elsewhere in the solar system at the present day. These include a nitrogen atmosphere with a condensible gas—methane—replacing the Earth's water, leading to an active meteorology with rainfall and surface manifestations ...

Auroras on Planets around Pulsars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
The first extrasolar planets were discovered serendipitously, by finding the slight variation in otherwise highly regular timing of the pulses, caused by the planets orbiting a millisecond pulsar.
