On the Confinement of a Plasma by Magnetostatic Fields

The Physics of Fluids, 1959
The plasma is treated as an assembly of classical particles having masses m+ and m− and charges ±e. It is shown that if such a plasma is in thermodynamic equilibrium it is unaffected by a magnetostatic field. In particular, it cannot be confined by a magnetostatic field and at the same time be in equilibrium.

Variational principle in 3D magnetostatic field

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1988
It is demonstrated that in a 3-D nonlinear field the variational principle does not hold. Using a dyadic operator, a new expression is introduced in place of the curl curl operation for vector potential translation of magnetostatic field equations. The control equation, taking the gauge of the vector potential A into account, is then clarified and ...

On the stationary state of a plasma in magnetostatic and potential fields II

Czechoslovak Journal of Physics, 1966
The density distribution on the lines of force of the magnetostatic field is established under certain simplifying conditions for a plasma bounded by a combination of a magnetostatic and a potential field. The distribution functions of the particles, too, are determined for some of the cases being examined.

On the energy of a magnetostatic field

2016
Certain facts cast some doubt upon the ‘plus’ sign of the term for the energy flux of a magnetostatic field in the Poynting formula. To cite an example, consider two equal point charges moving uniformly with equal velocities. Generally the electric repulsive forces act on the charges, being directed along the line connecting them.

Instability in a counterstreaming plasma with a magnetostatic field

Journal of Applied Physics, 1974
The instability of an electromagnetic wave propagating obliquely to a counterstreaming plasma is investigated for the case in which the magnetostatic field is normal to the plane containing the wave vector and the stream direction. The stream direction normal to the wave vector is a singular case for which, if the magnetostatic field is less than a ...

Teaching the magnetostatic field: Problems to avoid

American Journal of Physics, 1991
A widely recognized problem that physics teachers encounter is the difficulty that most students have when solving problems related to magnetic field line distributions in the presence of hard- and softmagnetic materials. Two causes of these difficulties are identified: (1) The fact that the hysteresis is introduced as the typical behavior of ...

Magnetostatic Fields at an Iron-Air Boundary

American Journal of Physics, 1961
It is often stated that the magnetic field in the vicinity of a body of infinite permeability (hereafter called iron) is perpendicular to the boundary surface. This property is not always true. The present analysis presents a criterion which allows one to predict whether the perpendicularity condition is valid or not. The boundary-value problem for the
