Evidence of guide field magnetic reconnection in flapping current sheets

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Physics
Based on current sheet flapping motion on 27 August 2018 in the dusk flank magnetotail, as recorded by instruments aboard Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft, we present the first study of guide field reconnection observed in the flux rope ...

Magnetic Rope Is an Electron Selector: Discovery in Space and Conceptual Application to Medicine

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Magnetic rope is a helical structure existing ubiquitously in astrophysical and space plasmas. Such structure has been conventionally known to accelerate electrons, convert energy, and play key roles in driving solar eruptions. Here, in contrast to the conventional concept, we report that the magnetic rope can divert electrons efficiently in ...

Shear flow instabilities in the Earth's magnetotail

open access: yes, 1996
Shear flow instability is studied in the Earth's magnetotail by treating plasma as compressible. A dispersion relation is derived from the linearized MHD equations using the oscillating boundary conditions at the inner central plasma sheet/outer ...

A Novel Method to Train Classification Models for Structure Detection in In Situ Spacecraft Data

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
We present a method for creating spacecraft‐like data which can be used to train Machine Learning (ML) models to detect and classify structures in in situ spacecraft data.

Wavy nature of the magnetotail neutral sheet

open access: yes, 1978
Crossings of the magnetotail neutral sheet are examined with 20 s averaged magnetic field data from Imp 5 satellite. It is shown that for some multiple neutral sheet crossings, the By component reverses its sign between adjacent crossings.

Localized Reconnection in the Near Jovian Magnetotail

open access: yes, 1998
The oppositely directed magnetic field in the jovian magnetic tail is expected eventually to reconnect across the current sheet, allowing plasma produced deep inside the magnetosphere near Io's orbit to escape in the antisolar direction down the tail ...

Substorm onset in the magnetotail.

open access: yesJournal of geomagnetism and geoelectricity, 1978
Known signatures of the expansion phase onset in the magnetotail are summarized and discussed. A model is suggested for the nature of the multiple onset events. The importance is emphasized of observing the low-latitude magnetotail at |X|-10 to 15 RE at and shortly before the onset of the expansion phase.

Magnetotail Current Sheet Prior to Magnetic Reconnection

open access: yes, 2019
International audienceThe onset of magnetic reconnection is one of the crucial and still poorly understood problems. The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission provides a unique opportunity for the long-term monitoring the Earth's magnetotail current ...
