Maximum Magnitude of Completeness in a Salt Mine [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2015
Abstract In this study, we analyze acoustic emission (AE) data recorded at the Morsleben salt mine, Germany, to assess the catalog completeness, which plays an important role in any seismicity analysis. We introduce the new concept of a magnitude completeness interval consisting of a maximum magnitude of completeness ( M c(max) ) in addition to the ...

On the Magnitude of Completeness Thresholds in Bounded Model Checking

open access: yes2012 27th Annual IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science, 2012
Bounded model checking (BMC) is a highly successful bug-finding method that examines paths of bounded length for violations of a given regular or omega-regular specification. A completeness threshold for a given model M and specification phi is a bound k such that, if no counterexample to phi of length k or less can be found in M, then M in fact ...

A Homogeneous Earthquake Catalog for Western Turkey and Magnitude of Completeness Determination

open access: yesBulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2013
Abstract A catalog for earthquakes that occurred in western Turkey during the period 1964–2010 is compiled for achieving homogeneity for magnitudes. Data are obtained from the International Seismological Center (ISC), where earthquake magnitudes are reported in different scales and come from a variety of sources.

Quantifying the Impact of Declustering Techniques on Completeness Magnitude Estimation

open access: yesBulletin of the Seismological Society of America
ABSTRACT Seismicity analysis and earthquake hazard assessment require catalogs of independent events and accurate estimates of completeness. The magnitude of completeness (Mc) defines the threshold below which earthquakes are likely to be missed; declustering, used to remove dependent events, can substantially alter Mc by reshaping ...

Bayesian Estimation of the Spatially Varying Completeness Magnitude of Earthquake Catalogs

open access: yesBulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2011
Assessing the completeness magnitude Mc of earthquake catalogs is an essential prerequisite for any seismicity analysis. We employ a simple model to com- puteMc inspacebasedontheproximitytoseismicstationsinanetwork.Weshowthata relationship of the form M predd ad bc, with d the distance to the kth nearest seismic station, fits the observations well ...

Completeness - II. A signal-to-noise ratio approach for completeness estimators applied to galaxy magnitude-redshift surveys [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2010
This is the second paper in our completeness series, which addresses some of the issues raised in the previous article by Johnston, Teodoro & Hendry, in which we developed statistical tests for assessing the completeness in apparent magnitude of ...

Statistics of the earthquakes in the central Himalaya and its vicinity in last 56 years, with an emphasis in the 25 April 2015 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake

open access: yesContributions to Geophysics and Geodesy, 2021
To understand the variation of stress levels in the region 80°E – 89°E and 26°N – 31°N, the statistical analysis of earthquake frequency-magnitude distribution and spatio-temporal variation of fractal correlation dimension of earthquake epicenter ...

Probability of Magnitude Detection for the Greater Cairo Seismological Network, Egypt. [PDF]

open access: yesDelta Journal of Science, 2023
this work is to evaluate the performance of the Greater Cairo seismological network through the probability of magnitude detection in this region, adopting the probability-based magnitude of completeness method.

Counts of Quasars at Faint Magnitudes: A New Complete Sample [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1986
We present results on a new sample of optically selected quasar candidates. The “standard” multicolor technique for selecting quasar candidates has been applied to all the objects brighter than J = 22.0 in a field of 0.69 square degrees. Additional candidates have been selected from a search on grism plates obtained in the same area.
