Same-Different Judgments With Alphabetic Characters: The Case of Literal Symbol Processing
Learning mathematics requires fluency with symbols that convey numerical magnitude. Algebra and higher-level mathematics involve literal symbols, such as "x", that often represent numerical magnitude.

Dissociable Processes for Orientation Discrimination Learning and Contextual Illusion Magnitude [PDF]
Previous research suggests an inverse relationship between human orientation discrimination sensitivity and tilt illusion magnitude. To test whether these perceptual functions are inherently linked, we measured both orientation discrimination sensitivity and the magnitude of the tilt illusion before and after participants had been trained for three ...

ABSTRACT Background Timely cancer diagnosis in children and adolescents is important to improving outcomes. We aimed to quantify time to diagnosis and assess variations by patient, demographic and system‐level factors. Procedure We conducted a population‐based study of individuals aged 0–19 years diagnosed with one of 12 cancers from 2010 to 2022 in ...

Time and magnitude monitoring based on the renewal reward process
Time between event (TBE) charts are SPC tools for monitoring the occurrence of unwanted events, such as the appearance of a defective item or a failure of a piece of equipment. In some cases, a magnitude, indicating the severity of the event, is also measured.

ABSTRACT Background Embryonal tumors comprise the majority of malignant central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms diagnosed in children under 3 years of age. Compared with their counterparts in older children, these tumors exhibit distinct molecular biology and a more aggressive clinical phenotype, while their management is complicated by the heightened ...

We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

The effect of numerical magnitude on the perceptual processing speed of a digit
In this study, we investigated whether the numerical information of a digit would affect perceptual processing speed for that digit. In Experiment 1, participants performed a temporal order judgment (TOJ) task in which they judged the order of two digits presented briefly to the left or right of the fixation point with a short asynchrony.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Age does not count: resilience of quantity processing in healthy aging
Quantity skills have been extensively studied in terms of their development and pathological decline. Recently, numerosity discrimination has been shown to be remarkably resilient to healthy ageing, but whether processing continuous quantities such as ...

Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
