Imām Syāfi’ī merupakan salah seorang penggagas mazhab yang masih eksis hingga saat ini. Mazhab yang dicetus oleh beliau memiliki keistimewaan tersendiri yang berbeda dengan yang lainnya, di antaranya yaitu qaul qadīm dan qauljadīd. Istilah ini muncul disebabkan adanya revisi pendapat lama (qadīm) karena berbagai faktor yang menyebabkannya.
