Aerodynamic Measurements of the 777 Main Landing Gear Model

12th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference (27th AIAA Aeroacoustics Conference), 2006
*† ‡ § . Aerodynamic measurements were taken over two models (13% and 26%) of the 777 high fidelity isolated main landing gear in the 6- by 6-foot Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel (VT-SWT) at a free-stream Mach number of 0.16. Digital Particle Image Velocimetry measurements discussed in this paper are acquired at four locations over the 13% model of

Effects of Freeplay on Aircraft Main Landing Gear Stability

AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference, 2012
A study is made into the occurrence of shimmy oscillations in a dual-wheel main landing gear system. Nonlinear equations of motion are developed for the system and various nonlinear effects are considered including gyroscopic coupling, nonlinear tyre properties, geometric nonlinearities and fluid damping.

Rotational Drop-Testing of Airplane Main Landing Gear

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1946
Abstract The immediate physical objectives of drop-testing are presented, together with a general method for conducting rotational tests that have proper contact velocity and energy relationships coincidental with the absence of undesirable dynamic reactions at the pivot axis.

On the use of a steerable main landing gear for crosswind landing assistance

CEAS Aeronautical Journal, 2014
Several crosswind-related incidents show that landing under heavy crosswind conditions can be challenging for pilots and may pose a threat to aviation or at least lead to higher pilot workload and/or irregularities in operations. For transport aircraft the common approach technique for crosswind landings is the so-called crabbed approach with wings ...

Cracking in an Aircraft Main Landing Gear Sliding Strut

1993
Abstract Examination of several fighter aircraft main landing gear legs revealed unusual cracking in the hard chromium plating that covered the sliding section of the inner strut. The cracking was associated with cracks in the 35 NCD 16 steel beneath the plating.

Force Control of Main Landing Gear using Hybrid Magneto-Rheological Damper

Journal of the Korean Society for Aeronautical Space Science, 2010
To improve performance of the main landing gear for helicopters, a semi-active control landing gear is introduced in this paper. An MR damper based on commercial finite element electromagnetic field analysis of an electromagnet has been adapted the shock absorber.

Fatigue Crack Growth in Aircraft Main Landing Gear Wheels

1988
Fracture analysis of aircraft landing gear wheels under service-simulated operating loads using various fatigue crack growth characterization techniques is presented. Baseline constants for the wheel forging alloy 2014-T6 aluminum are established. The stress-intensity factors for a two-dimensional surface crack are developed using a proposed load model
