Not all reflection is equal: Reflective practice, not self‐reflection, correlates with Indonesian medical students' professional identity formation

open access: yesMedical Education, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Professional identity formation (PIF) plays a significant role in the development of medical students, with reflection expected to help learners align their personal values with the expectations of the profession. While theoretical models propose that reflection and PIF advance hand in hand, empirical studies suggest that the ...

Bridging data silos to holistically model plant macrophenology

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Phenological response to global climate change can impact ecosystem functions. There are various data sources from which spatiotemporal and taxonomic phenological data may be obtained: mobilized herbaria, community science initiatives, observatory networks, and remote sensing.

Seeing herbaria in a new light: leaf reflectance spectroscopy unlocks trait and classification modeling in plant biodiversity collections

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Reflectance spectroscopy is a rapid method for estimating traits and discriminating species. Spectral libraries from herbarium specimens represent an untapped resource for generating broad phenomic datasets across space, time, and taxa. We conducted a proof‐of‐concept study using trait data and spectra from herbarium specimens up to 179 yr old,

The Heterogeneous Regional Employment Effects of Environmental Policies

open access: yesOxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper examines the effects of Environmental Policies—measured by the OECD Environmental Policy Stringency Index (EPS)—on employment in 349 regions across 26 countries from 1990 to 2020. We find that more stringent EPS have short‐term negative effects on regional employment, which disappear in the medium term.

Other People's Money: Political Embeddedness on Pension Boards, Alternative Assets and Investment Fees

open access: yesPublic Budgeting &Finance, EarlyView.
Abstract State‐administered pension plans report paying roughly $20 billion each year in fees to external asset managers, much of it for high‐cost, high‐risk “alternative” assets such as private equity and hedge funds. These outcomes involve trillions in pension investments that affect the retirement security of millions of public sector workers and ...
