Hardening and Hollowing Out Private Property: Rentiership, Dispossession, and Planetary Extraction in the Marcellus Shale

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 58, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA) has long been an energy extractive periphery, continuously remade through cycles of dispossession and accumulation. Here we examine the changing dynamics of private property in these cycles and its central role in the latest phase of extraction—unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD).

From models to management: Implementing the climate‐change refugia conservation cycle in national parks of the northeastern United States

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 1, January 2026.
We provide two case‐studies that incorporate climate‐change refugia into management at local and regional scales. We demonstrate methods to test refugia predictions and monitor effectiveness. We share lessons learned to help other practitioners and scientists incorporate climate‐change refugia into management.

Elevation‐mediated cold water refugia in subalpine lakes

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 1, January 2026.
High‐elevation ecosystems may serve as climate change refugia by preserving colder conditions among rising regional temperatures, but this phenomenon is not well‐described in lakes compared to other systems. In subalpine lakes in the northern Appalachian Mountains, ice persisted longer into the year and water temperatures reached a lower summer maximum

Distribution Models Reveal Important Coastal Habitats for Endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim With the development and operation of offshore wind farms along the United States East Coast, it is imperative that we understand the distributions of vulnerable species so we can track and predict potential interactions. We focused on leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) as they depend on this region for important stages of ...
