New maize × Tripsacum hybrids for maize improvement
Euphytica, 1979Approximately 27 000 maize x tripsacum pollinations were made and 19 hybrids were identified. Fourteen of these hybrids were of the classical type, which possesses the full gametic complement of chromosomes from each parent. These hybrids are more like tripsacum than maize.

Developing hybrids from two improved maize populations
Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1974The performance of a group of 49 hybrids from seven elite maize (Zea mays L.) lines selected from each of the two populations, BSK(S)C5 and BSSS(R)C5, was compared with the varietal-cross hybrid of the source populations and with elite single-cross hybrids. Both populations had been improved by five cycles of recurrent selection.

Resistance of South African maize hybrids to maize streak virus
South African Journal of Plant and Soil, 1991Data from maize cultivar trials at Vaalharts over a five-year period were used to evaluate the level of resistance to maize streak virus (MSV) in commercial maize hybrids, and to determine the potential value of such resistance. Maize hybrids presently grown in South Africa showed varying degrees of resistance to MSV.

Crop Protection, 1992Abstract Established plant-breeding practices were used in the development of maize ( Zea mays ) inbreds (homozygous plants) resistant to maize streak virus (MSV). These were then crossed in various combinations to produce MSV-resistant hybrids. Recently, 150 white inbreds were infected with the virus in a field experiment.
