Effects of Defoliation on Lodging and Yield of Maize Hybrids

Experimental Agriculture, 1979
SUMMARYReducing the leaf areas of different maize hybrids at the time of female flowering resulted in a reduction of up to 70–90 g/plant of grain yield, with a parallel deterioration in the health of the stalk pith (due to infection by Fusarium sp.) and an increase in lodging.

Root Morphology of Maize and Its Relationship to Root Lodging

Journal of Agronomy and Crop Science, 1992
AbstractCrown root traits of maize (Zea mays L.) such as number and diameter are the most easily accessible root traits. Their impact on root lodging resistance is little documented. We evaluated 28 flint x dent hybrids at one location for 2 years for crown root traits and for lengths of internodes.

Lodging resistance increased by varying the distance between adjacent maize rows

Agronomy Journal, 2021
AbstractHigh planting density of maize (Zea mays L.) changes the distribution of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the canopy and reduces the stalk quality, thus increasing the risk of lodging. The light distribution in the canopy can be changed by changing the row spacing between adjacent row, which in turn may affect lodging resistance ...

Monitoring Maize Lodging Disaster Via Multi-Temporal Remote Sensing Images

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
The study aimed to monitor maize lodging in a large scale by using multi-temporal HJ-1B CCD images. The variation of vegetation indexes before and after lodging was analyzed. The sensitive vegetation index of maize lodging was selected by correlation analysis method.

Use of EDAH Improves Maize Morphological and Mechanical Traits Related to Lodging

Agronomy Journal, 2019
Core Ideas Use of EDAH decreased maize lodging across plant densities. EDAH increased strength, thickness and lignin content of internodes. The use of EDAH lowered ear position and leaf area above the ear. Use of EDAH lowered leaf angle so more leaves were erect.

Quantitative effects of solar radiation on maize lodging resistance mechanical properties

Field Crops Research, 2020
Abstract Lodging adversely affects maize (Zea mays L.) yields and quality, especially under low sunlight conditions. Here, we investigated the effects of different levels of solar radiation on maize lodging. To study the quantitative effects of different solar radiation on the lodging resistant mechanism of maize stalks, we chose two maize cultivars,

In-Field Evaluation of Root Lodging Resistance of Whole Maize Plants

Cold Spring Harbor Protocols
Root lodging due to wind is common in maize production worldwide, and can reduce photosynthetic capacity as well as nutrient uptake, resulting in significant yield loss and seed quality reduction. Lodging also causes harvesting problems, and ultimately increases production costs.
