Subrank and optimal reduction of scalar multiplications to generic tensors

open access: yesJournal of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 110, Issue 2, August 2024.
Abstract The subrank of a tensor measures how much a tensor can be diagonalized. We determine this parameter precisely for essentially all (i.e., generic) tensors. Namely, we prove for generic tensors in V⊗V⊗V$V \otimes V \otimes V$ with dim(V)=n$\dim (V) = n$ that the subrank is Θ(n)$\Theta (\sqrt {n})$.
