This paper discusses the geodynamic evolution of the Makran accretionary prism from a new field investigation in the Pakistani area and from the interpretation of reprocessed seismic lines in the offshore area. The field reconnaissance has provided new structural data about the general structure of the prism and a rejuvenated stratigraphic chart based ...

Appraisal of gas-hydrate/free-gas from VP/VS ratio in the Makran accretionary prism
Marine and Petroleum Geology, 2008Existence of gas-hydrate in the marine sediments elevates both the P- and S-wave seismic velocities, whereas even a small amount of underlying free-gas decreases the P-wave velocity considerably and the S-wave velocity remains almost unaffected. Study of both P- and S-wave seismic velocities or their ratio (VP/VS) for the hydrate-bearing sediment ...

Abstract Gas hydrates are classified as a major unconventional resource and assumed to be a future potential energy source. High pressures, low temperature stability conditions of the hydrates restrict their occurrence to the permafrost and deep sea regions (from the continental slop to the abyssal).

Seismic reflection data from the Makran continental margin indicate the presence of a strong and widespread bottom simulating reflector (BSR). We apply a nonlinear full waveform inversion technique to multichannel reflection data from this area, to investigate the detailed velocity structure and hence the origin of the BSR.

Deformation of the Makran accretionary sediment prism in the Gulf of Oman (north-west Indian Ocean)
Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 1982Summary The offshore Makran of Pakistan and Iran in the Gulf of Oman forms the seaward margin of a folded and faulted accretionary sediment wedge which extends several hundred kilometres inland across the onshore Makran. Sediment is being scraped off the oceanic Arabian plate as it subducts shallowly northward beneath the Eurasian plate.

Abstract We present paleomagnetic data from two overturned kink folds with horizontal axes, located NW of the Makran accretionary prism, southern Iran. In each one of these structures, the subvertical and the overturned limbs have been sampled in order to perform a fold test.

We report the first discovery and sampling of a methane-hydrogen sulfide rich “cold seep” from the Makran accretionary prism off Pakistan (Arabian Sea). A variety of cm- to m-scale pockmarks and gas seepage structures were identified from underwater TV-photo sled profiles crossing the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), related to highresolution seismic ...

Abstract The Bajgan Complex, one of the basement constituents of the arc massif in Iranian Makran forms a rugged, deeply incised terrain. The complex consists of pelitic schists with minor psammitic and basic schists, calc silicate rocks, amphibolites, marbles, metavolcanosediments, mafic and felsic intrusives as well as ultramafic rocks. Metapelitic

The complex interplay between thrust wedge deformation, tectonically-induced fluid overpressures, and the complex phases of wedge-top sedimentary depositional systems in accretionary prisms presents a formidable challenge. The offshore Makran accretionary prism is the world's largest, formed by the convergence of Arabian plate underneath Eurasian plate
