Chemoresistance in falciparum malaria
Trends in Parasitology, 2003Tropical countries increasingly face the burden of drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum infections. Malaria-related mortality of African children rises in contrast to the decline of the overall mortality of children under five years of age in sub-Saharan Africa within the past four decades.

Three cases of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in seamen, all acquired while working off tropical West Africa, and all in patients coming in for treatment at a New Orleans hospital during one six-week period, are described in the context of the importance of considering recent travel history for arrival at the correct diagnosis and treatment.

Falciparum malaria and pregnancy
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1979During pregnancy an increase occurs in the prevalence and density of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. The increase relative to non-pregnant women remains fairly constant with age though there is an over-all decrease in prevalence and density in both groups with age. The increase is at a height relatively early in pregnancy and declines after mid-term. At

Falciparum malaria in children
Current Opinion in Pediatrics, 1996Recent reports have substantiated claims that the clinical spectrum of falciparum malaria is different in African children as compared with nonimmune adults. The SPf66 vaccine has been tried in African children with varying success, but only insecticide-treated bed nets have reduced the mortality.

MEPACRINE AND FALCIPARUM MALARIA
QJM: An International Journal of Medicine, 19471. The chemotherapeutic action of mepacrine is directly related to the concentration of the drug in the blood. The minimal daily blood mepacrine level that will prevent malaria is about 100 μg. per litre. 2. An aborted form of malaria with transient fever occurred in a consider able proportion of volunteers taking the usual suppressive dose of 0.1 ...

Falciparum malaria in pregnancy
International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics, 2007Malaria in pregnancy is one of the major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide and leads to poor birth outcomes. Chloroquin is widely used but falciparum resistance to this antimalarial agent and late presentation translate into persisting morbidity and mortality.

Gametocytemia in Falciparum Malaria
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1971To the Editor.— We have always recognized the difference in treatment of the asexual and sexual forms of malaria. People forget that the asexual forms of Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites have a 48-hour cycle as compared to a ten-day or two-week cycle for gametocytes.

CHLOROQUINE-RESISTANT FALCIPARUM MALARIA
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1967During 1967 more than 300,000 American troops are expected to return to the United States from South Vietnam. Those who have engaged in combat in the central highland jungle have probably been exposed to virulent strains of Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

Human malaria parasites in continuous culture.
Science, 1976Plasmodium falciparum can now be maintained in continuous culture in human erythrocytes incubated at 38 degrees C in RPMI 1640 medium with human serum under an atmosphere with 7 percent carbon dioxide and low oxygen (1 or 5 percent).

DOXYCYCLINE PROPHYLAXIS FOR FALCIPARUM MALARIA
The Lancet, 1987188 schoolchildren aged 10-15 living in a malaria endemic area along the Thai-Burmese border were matched for age, splenomegaly, and weight and were then randomly assigned to receive either doxycycline (adult equivalent of 100 mg daily) or chloroquine (adult equivalent of 300 mg base weekly).
