A description of the poverty analysis of the 1997/8 Malawi Integrated Household Survey is presented. Basic needs poverty lines were developed and used with consumption-based measures of welfare to classify households and individuals as poor or non-poor.

Schistosomiasis in Lake Malawi
The Lancet, 1996In 1992 two US Peace Corps volunteers (PCVs) developed central nervous system schistosomiasis due to infection with Schistosoma haematobium following recreational water exposure at Cape Maclear on Lake Malawi, an African lake considered by many to be free of schistosomiasis.

Incidence of Retinoblastoma in Malawi
Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus, 1976The annual incidence of retinoblastoma in Malawi seems to be two cases per 100,000 children under five or one case per 10,000 live births. A higher frequency of one case per 21,700 to 17,900 children under five or one per 4,340 to 3,580 live births has been found in the Zomba and Mangochi districts.

We present the farmgate price simulation results from the model in Sect. 4.3 and the household welfare simulations in Sect. 4.4.
