AbstractThis chapter examines the evolution of Malay. It is argued that Malay, in both its standard and colloquial forms, is the product of incomplete transmission of Proto-Western Malayo-Polynesian grammar. Given Malay's longtime status as a regional lingua franca, it is most economical to suppose that this status was the causal factor.
