スチレン-無水マレイン酸コポリマーは無触媒でもアルコールと容易に反応して片エステルを生じる。片エステルを両エステルにエステル化する反応速度は多量の触媒を用いても非常に小であるが, 長時間反応を行なえば完全にエステル化できる。ブチル両エステルの水酸化カリウムによるケン化反応の速度定数は100℃ で0.42l/mol/hrであり, 非常に小である。ブチル片エステルのケン化反応速度はブチル両エステルのそれに比して無視できるほど小である。n-オクチルおよびn-ドデシル両エステルも合成し, これらのコポリマーの赤外線吸収スペクトル, 溶解性および極限粘度などを測定した。
