Circularity of the Malmquist productivity index

Economic Theory, 2006
The geometric mean version of the Malmquist productivity index does not satisfy the circular test, and its component adjacent period indexes can give different productivity change measures for the same data. A fixed-base version of the index solves both problems, but it is not independent of the base period.

The Malmquist Productivity Index and Plant Capacity Utilization [PDF]

open access: possibleThe Scandinavian Journal of Economics, 2000
A new decomposition of the Malmquist productivity index is proposed to account for changes in plant capacity utilization. Using a primal, non‐parametric specification of technology, the Malmquist index is decomposed into technical efficiency change, variations in plant capacity utilization and frontier shifts.

A global Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index

Journal of Productivity Analysis, 2010
This paper introduces an alternative environmentally sensitive productivity growth index, which is circular and free from the infeasibility problem. In doing so, we integrated the concept of the global production possibility set and the directional distance function.

The Decomposition of Malmquist Productivity Indexes

Journal of Productivity Analysis, 2003
Two different Malmquist productivity indexes have been proposed. One I call partially oriented because it is either output- or input-oriented, and the other is simultaneously output- and input-oriented. The partially oriented Malmquist index owes some of its popularity to the fact that it has been decomposed to isolate various sources of productivity ...

Malmquist Luenberger productivity index for microfinance productivity measurement

International Journal of Mathematics in Operational Research, 2021
The objective of the study is to measure the microfinance institutions (MFIs) productivity by integrating the undesirable output, i.e., the non-performing loans (NPLs).

Malmquist Productivity Indexes and Fisher Ideal Indexes: Comment

The Economic Journal, 1993
Fare and Grosskopf (I992) (henceforth abbreviated as FG) showed that, under some conditions, the productivity index, defined as the geometric mean of two input based Malmquist productivity indexes, is equal to the quotient of the Fisher input (quantity) index and the Fisher output (quantity) index.

Malmquist Productivity Indexes and DEA

2011
In this chapter, we provide an overview of our recent work on data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Malmquist productivity indexes. First, we review the construction of static and dynamic DEA technologies. Based on these technologies we show how DEA can be used to estimate the Malmquist productivity index introduced by Caves et al.

Cross Malmquist Productivity Index in Data Envelopment Analysis

4OR, 2021
In Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) is an important instrument used to assess dynamic performance. In this paper, to deal with overestimation, to increase rationality, and to reduce dependence on self-assessment results, we equip MPI with the cross-evaluation strategy.
