The Malmquist Productivity Index and Plant Capacity Utilization [PDF]

open access: possibleThe Scandinavian Journal of Economics, 2000
A new decomposition of the Malmquist productivity index is proposed to account for changes in plant capacity utilization. Using a primal, non‐parametric specification of technology, the Malmquist index is decomposed into technical efficiency change, variations in plant capacity utilization and frontier shifts.

Circularity of the Malmquist productivity index

Economic Theory, 2006
The geometric mean version of the Malmquist productivity index does not satisfy the circular test, and its component adjacent period indexes can give different productivity change measures for the same data. A fixed-base version of the index solves both problems, but it is not independent of the base period.

Malmquist Productivity Indexes and Fisher Ideal Indexes: Comment

The Economic Journal, 1993
Fare and Grosskopf (I992) (henceforth abbreviated as FG) showed that, under some conditions, the productivity index, defined as the geometric mean of two input based Malmquist productivity indexes, is equal to the quotient of the Fisher input (quantity) index and the Fisher output (quantity) index.

Malmquist Luenberger productivity index for microfinance productivity measurement

International Journal of Mathematics in Operational Research, 2021
The objective of the study is to measure the microfinance institutions (MFIs) productivity by integrating the undesirable output, i.e., the non-performing loans (NPLs).

Malmquist Productivity Indexes and DEA

2011
In this chapter, we provide an overview of our recent work on data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Malmquist productivity indexes. First, we review the construction of static and dynamic DEA technologies. Based on these technologies we show how DEA can be used to estimate the Malmquist productivity index introduced by Caves et al.

The biennial Malmquist productivity change index

Socio-Economic Planning Sciences, 2011
Abstract In this paper we introduce a new Malmquist productivity index that has three attractive features: it avoids linear programming infeasibilities under variable returns to scale, it allows for technical regress, and it does not need to be recomputed when a new time period is added to the data set.

The Malmquist Total Factor Productivity Index

The Scandinavian Journal of Economics, 1996
The definitions of the Malmquist output and input quantity indexes specified by D. W. Caves, L. R. Christensen, and W. E. Diewert (1982) are applied in this study. Based on these indexes, a 'Malmquist total factor productivity index' is derived for general production structures.

Bootstrapping the Malmquist indexes for Italian airports

International Journal of Production Economics, 2012
Abstract This paper uses data envelopment analysis to assess the operational performance of 28 Italian airports during the period of 2000 through 2006. Recent developments in bootstrapping techniques are used to correct total factor productivity estimates for bias and to assess the uncertainty surrounding such estimates.

A note on the choice of Malmquist productivity index and Malmquist total factor productivity index [PDF]

open access: possible, 2006
This paper by analyzing the two popular methodologies of productivity measurement provides an example that illustrates the differences when adopting the two methodologies. Furthermore, under the restriction of constant returns to scale raises some methodological issues regarding the theory of productivity measurement using the Malmquist Productivity ...
