Harbor porpoise losing its edge: Genetic time series suggests a rapid population decline in Iberian waters over the last 30 years. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2023
The Iberian harbor porpoises form a small and semi‐isolated population belonging to a distinctive ecotype adapted to the upwelling system in the southern European Atlantic waters. Here, we analyzed the mitochondrial genetic variation for a sampling spanning over the past 30 years and reported a dramatic decline in diversity.

Shearing Tooth Morphology May Allow Sharks to Access Higher Trophic Levels at Smaller Sizes. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Predator morphology imposes limitations on prey selection due to biomechanical constraints, making some prey functionally inaccessible and thereby constraining predator trophic niches. We assessed how two key components of trophic morphology—tooth shape and body size—affect prey selectivity and trophic niche in two sympatric sharks with contrasting ...

Lobomycosis-like disease epidemiology, pathology and social affiliations in bottlenose dolphins from Southwestern Gulf of Mexico

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Mycotic diseases are considered a worldwide growing concern related to public health. Lobomycosis like disease (LLD) (Lacazia loboi) is a chronic and progressive infection in skin of humans and small cetaceans present in both sides of the Americas ...

Opportunistic gillnet depredation by common bottlenose dolphins in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico: Testing the relationship with ecological, trophic, and nutritional characteristics of their prey

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Competition between fisheries and bottlenose dolphins is a globally relevant conflict given its socioeconomic and ecological implications. Understanding the factors driving the interactions between dolphins and fishery activities is key to the ...

Decreases in encounter rate of endangered Northeast Pacific humpback whales in Southern Costa Rica: Possible changes in migration pattern due to warming events

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Warming events in the Pacific Ocean are becoming more frequent, intense, and on a larger temporal and spatial scale. This has caused critical habitats of marine species to lose their quality and marine organisms respond by modifying their critical ...

Vertebral Morphology in Partially Sympatric Dolphins: A 3D Approach

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
In cetaceans, increased body flexibility is associated with increased maneuverability, this affects the animal’s swimming speed and foraging behavior. A more stable body form is associated with fast swimming and wide turns.
