Over a 7-year period, 94 mammograms were performed for male breast disease. Indications included breast enlargement, tenderness, mass, and previous mastectomy. Fatty enlargement was easily diagnosed. Gynecomastia was unilateral in 28 of 40 cases and easily differentiated from malignancy in all but one patient in whom nipple retraction was present.

Mammography is one of the most technically demanding examinations in radiology, and it requires X-ray technology designed specifi cally for the task. The pathology to be imaged ranges from small (20–100 μm) high density microcalcifications to ill-defi ned low contrast masses. These must be imaged against a background of mixed densities.

Cancer, 1990
The goals of screening mammography are reproducibly optimum images, accurately interpreted, at the lowest possible cost. This can reduce the mortality from breast cancer. Despite this, screening mammography has not been widely used because of the controversy over the age at onset and interval of screening, charge for the examination, misinformed ...

Radiologic Clinics of North America, 1992
Mammography has had a major impact on the earlier detection, treatment options, and management decisions and survival and mortality rates of breast cancer. Consequences include overwhelming demand for mammography; problems with optimum response by radiology; limited availability of the examination, especially to the socioeconomically disadvantaged ...

Radiology, 1977
Ultrasound mammography was performed with unique, high resolution equipment which displays changes in acoustic properties of tissues through a calibrated gray scale. Color-coded isodensitometry was used to assist in the differential diagnosis. The rate of agreement between the ultrasound and pathological diagnoses was 86.7%.

Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRI, 1996
There has been a long history of public and professional concern about the safety and quality of mammography. Whereas concerns about radiation dose levels dominated the 1970s, the type of equipment used in mammography was the focus of the 1980s. In the early 1990s, there was a lack of confidence in the overall quality of mammography.
