Habitat Suitability for a Unique, Fully Marine American Manatee (Trichechus manatus) Population Primarily Depends on Presence of Submarine Freshwater Springs

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT The American manatee (Trichechus manatus) requires freshwater mainly from rivers and springs to maintain osmoregulatory balance in saline environments. However, in Brazil's semi‐arid Potiguar Basin, manatees now rely solely on submarine freshwater springs because hypersaline estuaries have become unsuitable sources of freshwater.

Identification of alimentary components of Antillean manatee diet in the Northeast of Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesBiotemas, 2008
The manatees are considered to be opportunist herbivors, consuming a great amount of alimentary items. The aim of the present study was to identify the alimentary components of the diet of Antillean manatees in free life in the northeastern region of ...

Linking Use of Ship Channels by West Indian Manatees (Trichechus manatus) to Seasonal Migration and Habitat Use

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
Research on marine mammal occurrence in ship channels often focuses on large cetaceans in offshore shipping routes, while nearshore research largely addresses small vessel strikes.

Microplastic Munchies: Exploring Microplastic Trophic Transfer Potential Between Two Key Prey Fish Species and Resident Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Sarasota Bay, Florida

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Microplastics have been identified in hundreds of species, with evidence of trophic transfer via contaminated prey. Sarasota Bay common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) serve as sentinels of coastal pollution, including plastics and chemical plasticizers. Previous research confirmed microplastic ingestion in these dolphins (100.0%, n =

Transforming Human–Manatee Relations: Socio‐Ecological Drivers of Conflict and Coexistence in Lake Ossa, Cameroon

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquatic ecosystems worldwide face increasing human–wildlife conflicts as fishing activities overlap with critical habitats for vulnerable species. Human–wildlife interactions in artisanal fisheries exemplify socio‐ecological systems that necessitate adaptive management approaches, integrating ecological and social dimensions.

The evolving therapeutic landscape of spinal muscular atrophy – A scoping review of investigational agents, emerging delivery technologies and strategic innovations

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Volume 92, Issue 6, Page 1552-1566, June 2026.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe neuromuscular disease with emerging therapeutic complexity. This review aims to systematically map the global pipeline of investigational treatments for SMA. Using ClinicalTrials.gov and complementary international registries, we identified 21 planned or ongoing interventional trials from 2020 to 2025 targeting

Using Pooled Local Expert Opinions (PLEO) to Discern Patterns in Sightings of Live and Dead Manatees (Trichechus senegalensis, Link 1785) in Lower Sanaga Basin, Cameroon. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
We aimed at unveiling patterns in live and dead manatee sightings in the Lower Sanaga Basin, Cameroon. For this purpose, the expert opinions of 133 local fishers were collected during in-person interviews, distilled using categorical data analysis, and ...
