Manual graphic roadmap for transarterial coil embolization of guttural pouch arteries in horses: A technical note

open access: yesVeterinary Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract This technical note describes the use of a manual graphic roadmap (MGR) to assist fluoroscopic guidance during transarterial coil embolization (TACE) for guttural pouch (GP) arterial hemorrhage. Horses underwent MGR‐assisted TACE at the Equine Clinic, Free University of Berlin, between 2012 and 2024.

Tooth eruption status and bite force determine dental microwear texture gradients in albino rats (Rattus norvegicus forma domestica)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 9, Page 2411-2423, September 2026.
Abstract Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) is widely applied for inferring diet in vertebrates. Besides diet and ingesta properties, factors like wear stage and bite force may affect microwear formation, potentially leading to tooth position‐specific microwear patterns.

Evaluation of Morphological and Osteometric Sex Estimation on Historical Skeletal Material of Subadult Individuals From Germany

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Biological Anthropology, Volume 190, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Objectives While sex estimation based on morphological features of the adult skeleton is considered reliable, it proves to be challenging, especially in skeletons of subadults. The purpose of this study is to investigate the accuracy of sex estimation of the methods described below and errors within the observer and between observers ...

Morphological Sex Classification in Rat Mandibles Using a Hybrid and Explainable Machine Learning

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 4, July 2026.
A hybrid and explainable machine learning framework was developed for sex classification from rat mandibles by integrating osteometric measurements, handcrafted image features and deep learning‐based features. The hybrid model achieved high classification performance and enabled biologically meaningful interpretation of morphological features through ...

Changes in the microbiome and metabolome in captive red kangaroos (Osphranter rufus) affected by macropod progressive periodontal disease

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, Volume 104, Issue 6, Page 365-375, June 2026.
Macropod progressive periodontal disease (MPPD) is a severe oral condition frequently observed in captive macropods, particularly red kangaroos (Osphranter rufus), yet its underlying biological features remain poorly understood. In this exploratory descriptive study, we investigated oral and fecal microbiomes and metabolomic profiles in captive red ...
