Mandibular Gland Secretion of Melipona beecheii: Chemistry and Behavior

The mandibular gland secretion of Melipona beecheii contains a rich mixture of terpenoid and oxygenated compounds and unsaturated and saturated hydrocarbons. However, it differs markedly from the 11 other Brazilian species examined in previous studies, both by the absence of 2-heptanol and the presence of rose oxides.

Identification of mellein in the mandibular gland secretions of carpenter ants

Abstract The mandibular gland secretions of males of the ants Camponotus herculeanus, C. ligniperda , and C. pennsylvanicus contain three major volatile substances. These compounds have been identified as 3,4-dihydro-8-hydroxy-3-methylisocoumarin (mellein or ochracin), methyl 6-methylsalicylate, and 10-methyldodecanoic acid.

An 8-year-old, intact male, Jack Russell Terrier dog was admitted with a 10-day history of an enlargement in the right submandibular area.
