Lagomorph cranial biomechanics and the functional significance of the unique fenestrated rostrum of leporids

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The crania of leporid lagomorphs are uniquely fenestrated, including the posterior cranial bones and the lateral portion of the maxilla. The functional significance of the highly fenestrated rostrum has received considerably little attention, despite being absent in other mammalian herbivores with a long rostrum.

Mandibular Movements Identify Respiratory Efforts Due to Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in a Pre-school Child

open access: yes, 2014
Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is a major cause of obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) in childhood. Increased respiratory effort associated with OSAS is accompanied by an increase in pulse transit time (PTT) but also mandibular movements (MMs) amplify with ...

A specialized motion capture system for real-time analysis of mandibular movements using infrared cameras

open access: yesBioMedical Engineering OnLine, 2013
BackgroundIn the last years, several methods and devices have been proposed to record the human mandibular movements, since they provide quantitative parameters that support the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders.

Revisiting paravertebral muscles in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) (Leporidae; Lagomorpha)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Domesticated European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have long been chosen as laboratory model organisms. Despite this, there has been no definitive study of the vertebral musculature of wild rabbits. Relevant descriptions of well‐studied veterinary model mammals (such as dogs) are generally applicable, but not appropriate for a species ...

Improvement of Mandibular Kinetics and Quality of Life in Elderly with Mini-Implant Retained Overdentures: A Preliminary Study

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Successful health management in older adults requires adequate nutrition, which is often compromised by oral health issues like edentulism. Tooth loss can reduce masticatory function, especially when rehabilitation treatments fail. The present study aims

Tooth row allometry in domestic rabbits and nondomestic lagomorphs: Evidence for a decoupling of body and tooth row size changes in evolutionary time

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Domestic rabbits of different body sizes differ disproportionately in the length of their tooth row or the length of their diastema. Abstract In various domestic mammals, smaller breeds tend to have proportionally larger teeth, whereas this is not a universal trend across mammals.

Evaluation of acute radiation effects on mandibular movements of patients with head and neck cancer.

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Physical Therapy, 2012
OBJECTIVES To evaluate radiotherapy effects (RT) on mandibular movements of patients with head and neck cancer (H&NC) and associate them to the variables: functional capacity, radiation field, disease staging, type of feeding, concomitant chemotherapy ...

Are there morpho‐acoustic patterns of adaptation in nonhuman primate ears? Testing the role of ecology and habitat in shaping ear morphology and function

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Analysis of the variation in the bony structures of the inner and middle ear provides critical insights into functional morphology, as well as adaptive morphology across primates. In this study, we investigated whether ear morphology patterns are related to the ecological characteristics of species and their habitats to test two acoustic ...

Respiratory Mandibular Movement Signals Reliably Identify Obstructive Hypopnea Events During Sleep

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2019
Context: Accurate discrimination between obstructive and central hypopneas requires quantitative assessments of respiratory effort by esophageal pressure (OeP) measurements, which preclude widespread implementation in sleep medicine practice.
