Regulation of serpin gene-1 in Manduca sexta

Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 1995
Hemolymph of Manduca sexta contains proteins from the serpin superfamily, which are inhibitors of serine proteinases. We have used probes specific for M. sexta serpin gene-1 mRNA and protein to study the expression and hormonal regulation of this gene.

Paralytic and Plasmatocyte Spreading Peptide From Manduca sexta

2001
A family of hemolymph peptides with diverse biological activities has been identified in several Lepidopteran species. These peptides can cause rapid paralysis (Skinner et al., 1991), block growth and development (Hayakawa, 1991), and stimulate plasmatocyte spreading and aggregation (Clark et al., 1997). The 23-residue peptides are produced from larger

Hemolymph Proteinases in Immune Responses of Manduca sexta

2001
Extracellular signal transduction pathways in blood are often composed of cascades of serine proteinases to amplify rapidly a response to wounding or infection. The vertebrate blood coagulation and complement pathways are the most fully characterized of such proteinase cascades.

Intracellular calcium in prothoracic glands of Manduca sexta

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1998
Cytosolic free calcium was measured in individual prothoracic gland cells of Manduca larvae with Fura-2. During the last larval instar there was no correlation between intracellular calcium concentration and ecdysteroid secretion by the glands. The addition of prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) from brains of Manduca larvae to prothoracic glands in ...
