Feeding-induced rearrangement of green leaf volatiles reduces moth oviposition

open access: yeseLife, 2013
The ability to decrypt volatile plant signals is essential if herbivorous insects are to optimize their choice of host plants for their offspring. Green leaf volatiles (GLVs) constitute a widespread group of defensive plant volatiles that convey a ...

Complete mitochondrial characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of Deilephila elpenor (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae)

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2023
Deilephila elpenor is widely distributed in countries of Asia and Central Europe, and the larva is recognized as significant agriculture pest. The complete mitochondrial genome of D. elpenor is 15,372 bp in length.

Adipokinetic Hormone Gene Sequence from Manduca sexta

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1989
A gene sequence encoding the neuropeptide adipokinetic hormone (AKH) was isolated from a genomic library of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta. 2.5 x 10(5) recombinant plaques were screened with a 29-mer oligonucleotide substituted with deoxyinosine at six ambiguous codon positions.

Protease inhibitor controls prophenoloxidase activation in Manduca sexta [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1986
Prophenoloxidase from the hemolymph of tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta can be activated by a specific activating enzyme found in the cuticle. Inhibition studies with benzamidine, diisopropyl phosphofluoridate and p‐nitrophenyl‐p′‐guanidinobenzoate indicate that the activating enzyme is a trypsin‐like serine protease.

An initial event in insect innate immune response: structural and biological studies of interactions between β-1,3-glucan and the N-terminal domain of β-1,3-glucan recognition protein [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In response to invading microorganisms, insect β-1,3-glucan recognition protein (βGRP), a soluble receptor in the hemolymph, binds to the surfaces of bacteria and fungi and activates serine protease cascades that promote destruction of pathogens by means

A quantitative study of adipokinetic hormone of the firebug, Pyrrhocoris apterus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The development of an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) for the adipokinetic neuropeptide hormone, Pya-AKH, from the firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus L. is described. The ELISA measures as little as 20 fmol of Pya-AKH.

Diacylglycerol transport in the insect fat body: evidence of involvement of lipid droplets and the cytosolic fraction

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2001
In this report we show the existence of a distinct pool of fat body diacylglycerol (DG) that can be distinguished from the bulk DG. This is a dynamic pool of DG that uses FA entering the fat body from the hemolymph, whereas the bulk DG uses the fatty ...

Feedback Control as a Framework for Understanding Tradeoffs in Biology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Control theory arose from a need to control synthetic systems. From regulating steam engines to tuning radios to devices capable of autonomous movement, it provided a formal mathematical basis for understanding the role of feedback in the stability (or ...

A flight sensory-motor to olfactory processing circuit in the moth Manduca sexta

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2016
Neural circuits projecting information from motor pathways to sensory pathways are common across sensory domains. These circuits typically modify sensory function as a result of motor pattern activation; this is particularly so in cases where the ...

Anticancer metallohelices: nanomolar potency and high selectivity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A range of new helicate-like architectures have been prepared via highly diastereoselective self-assembly using readily accessible starting materials. Six pairs of enantiomers [Fe2L3]Cl4.nH2O (L = various bidentate ditopic ligands NN–NN) show very good ...
