Developing epidemiological preparedness for a plant disease invasion: Modelling citrus huánglóngbìng in the European Union

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 5, Page 1403-1423, September 2025.
Huánglóngbìng (HLB) is a bacterial disease of citrus that has significantly impacted Brazil and the United States, although citrus production in the Mediterranean Basin remains unaffected. By developing a mathematical model of spread in Spain, we tested surveillance and control strategies before any future HLB entry in the EU.

A novel approach for feline sporotrichosis pathogen detection based on loop‐mediated isothermal amplification

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 36, Issue 4, Page 474-484, August 2025.
Background – Sporotrichosis is a chronic, mycotic infection caused by fungi of the genus Sporothrix. Zoonotic sporotrichosis occurs mainly through S. brasiliensis transmission, resulting from the organism's traumatic introduction via scratches or bites, or contact with exudate from contaminated cats.

Abundance, Diversity and Phenology of Mosquito Larvae in a Highly Anthropized Wetland: Health and Management Implications of Gándaras de Budiño (NW Spain)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
The natural and anthropized wetland of Gándaras de Budiño (Galicia, Spain) hosts a great number of mosquito species. Culex pipiens s.l. and Culex torrentium pose an emerging risk for West Nile virus transmission. The temporary and polluted waters, as well as the summer and spring seasons, favor the larval proliferation of these vectors.

Ecological niche models based on occurrence records of the amphibian chytrid fungus overestimate lethal chytridiomycosis risk

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 4, Page 995-1006, April 2025.
Ecological niche models (ENMs) based on the presence data of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) can overestimate the mortality risk of chytridiomycosis because the environmental conditions suitable for Bd presence do not always correspond to those conducive to significant host mortality.

A Palearctic view of a bat fungal disease

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract The fungal infection causing white‐nose disease in hibernating bats in North America has resulted in dramatic population declines of affected species, since the introduction of the causative agent Pseudogymnoascus destructans. The fungus is native to the Palearctic, where it also infects several bat species, yet rarely causes severe pathology ...
