Beyond Blue Carbon: Estimating the Value of Ecosystem Services Provided by Coastal Wetlands in Aotearoa New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 3, September 2026.
Blue carbon ecosystems (BCE), including mangroves, saltmarshes, and seagrasses, provide essential functions and services globally but are increasingly challenged by climate change and other anthropogenic activities. In Aotearoa New Zealand (Aotearoa NZ), there is mounting interest in blue carbon as a nature‐based solution to climate change. Quantifying

Sea Urchin Removal as a Tool, Not a Solution: Practical Lessons for Kelp Restoration in Aotearoa New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 3, September 2026.
The increasing awareness of the extent of urchin barrens and impacts of sea urchin overgrazing on rocky reefs in Aotearoa New Zealand has led to a rapid increase in the use of sea urchin removal as a tool for kelp forest restoration. Here, we review these restoration projects, focusing on three case studies, with the aim to provide context on what ...

Diverse Prairie Mixtures Stabilize Biomass Yields for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1829-1838, September 2026.
Meeting global demand for sustainable aviation fuel will require the additional production of vast quantities of plant biomass, which does not compete with food production or degrade sensitive ecosystems. Our multisite experiment shows that sowing diverse native prairie seed mixes—and managing them without intensive inputs—yields a more reliable ...

Induced resistance of plants reduces their negative soil‐legacy effects on natives but not on naturalized aliens

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 8, August 2026.
Plant resistance induced during soil conditioning altered subsequent soil‐legacy effects on plant growth. While conditioned soils reduced the performance of both native and naturalized alien plants, resistance induction largely eliminated the growth disadvantage of native species.
