Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Dissolved manganese in ocean waters: analytical and biogeochemical studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of the natural sources and processes of the dissolved manganese associated with the Southern Ocean and the Tropical North-Eastern (NE) Atlantic Ocean.

The effect of desulfurization manganese residue powder on the workability, mechanical properties, and durability of concrete: A comprehensive study

open access: yesCase Studies in Construction Materials
To address resource depletion and environmental pollution stemming from industrialization, this study investigated the feasibility of utilizing desulfurized manganese residue powder (DMRP) as a cement-replacing mineral admixture in concrete, aiming to ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

The role of Manganese in the electrowinning of copper and zinc [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Manganese ions are often encountered as impurities in the electrolyte used in the electrowinning of copper and zinc. The effects of manganese ions in the electrolyte on the anodic behaviour of lead alloy anodes used in the electrowinning of copper and ...

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Effects of dietary manganese on growth and tissue manganese concentrations of juvenile gibel carp, Carassius auratus gibelio [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A 68-day growth trial was conducted in a flow-through system to determine the effect of dietary manganese levels on growth and tissue manganese concentration of juvenile gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio).

AscF in the mycobacterial CIII–CIV supercomplex lacks metal and nucleotide binding but links malate oxidation to respiration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The mycobacterial CIII‐CIV respiratory supercomplex is an obligate assembly, encompassing several subunits of unknown functions. We have characterized the intracellular subunit AscF, and show that it is unlikely to be a sensor for metals or nucleotides, but is required for growth on nonfermentable energy sources, and likely works as an adapter for ...

Manganese deposits of the Cape Peninsula, South Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The outcrops, petrography and geochemistry of manganese deposits were studied at several sites on the Cape Peninsula (Skeleton Gorge, Kasteelpoort Path, Kommetjie and Hout Bay) as well as at Rooi Els on the opposite side of False Bay.
