Secondary Impact of Manganese on the Catalytic Properties of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene in the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Catalysts play a key role in hydrogen production as green energy carriers. We show herein for the first time that manganese impurities in graphene can improve the catalytic activity of synthesized N‐doped graphene (NG) for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Arsenic in Groundwater in South West Ireland: Occurrence, Controls, and Hydrochemistry

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2018
Globally numerous regions have been identified with elevated arsenic within groundwater which can result in potential adverse health risks. In Ireland, a previous national-scale research assessment of groundwater identified isolated clusters of elevated ...

Ferromagnetic behavior of ultrathin manganese nanosheets

open access: yes, 2011
Ferromagnetic behaviour has been observed experimentally for the first time in nanostructured Manganese. Ultrathin ($\sim$ 0.6 nm) Manganese nanosheets have been synthesized inside the two dimensional channels of sol-gel derived Na-4 mica.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Electron paramagnetic resonance of manganese-doped strontium titanate [PDF]

open access: yesCerâmica
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of manganese-doped strontium titanate were investigated for several Mn concentrations. The spectra of Mn2+ and Mn4+ ions were observed and attributed, respectively, to Mn ions occupying Sr2+ and Ti4+ sites ...

Spin Model for Nontrivial Magnetic Orders in the Inverse-Perovskite Antiferromagnets

open access: yes, 2018
Nontrivial magnetic orders in the inverse-perovskite manganese nitrides are theoretically studied by constructing a classical spin model describing the magnetic anisotropy and frustrated exchange interactions inherent in specific crystal and electronic ...

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Epilepsy‐Associated Variants of a Single SCN1A Codon Exhibit Divergent Functional Properties

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Pathogenic variants in SCN1A, which encodes the voltage‐gated sodium channel NaV1.1, are associated with multiple epilepsy syndromes exhibiting a range of clinical severity. SCN1A variants are reported in different syndromes, including Dravet syndrome, which is associated with loss‐of‐function, whereas neonatal/infantile‐onset ...
