Crude manoeuvres [PDF]

open access: yesIndex on Censorship, 1997
There was a time when holidays on the Caspian Sea meant caviar and casinos. Now it's boom town Baku and the oil industry has descended to fight for a slice of the action on the world's latest wild ...

A Worm‐Inspired Origami Robot with Multimodal Locomotion for Adaptive Mobility in Complex Pipeline Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An origami worm‐inspired robot achieves multimodal locomotion in confined pipelines through mechatronic integration that embeds actuation, control, and communication within each origami module. Large, reversible configuration and dimensional changes enable 25 gaits synthesized by a unified framework across peristaltic, inchworm, and wheel‐rolling modes

Enhancing Wheelchair Manoeuvrability for Severe Impairment Users

open access: yesInternational Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems, 2013
A significant number of individuals with severe motor impairments are unable to control their wheelchair using a standard joystick. Even when they can facilitate the control input, navigation in a confined space or crowded environments is still a great ...

Tunable High‐Performance Metamaterial Filters Based on Novel SRR Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Based on two novel SRR configurations and two independent SRR integration approaches, four tunable bandpass metamaterial filters were fabricated with an ultra‐thin ceramic substrate. Among them, SM‐2 achieves over 97% electromagnetic wave transmittance, with a minimal 1.15% deviation in its resonant frequency prediction, making them promising ...

Unraveling the Power of Disorder: A Bioinspired Cuttlebone Structure With Superior Strength, Energy Absorption and Isotropy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Cuttlebone‐inspired architected metamaterials introduce controlled structural disorder to simultaneously enhance strength, energy absorption, and compressive stability. Tunable disorder suppresses shear anisotropy, outperforms periodic lattices, and establishes discrete randomness as a robust route to high‐performance lightweight mechanical ...

‘Somewhere on the border of credibility’: the cultural construction and contestation of 'the border' in white South African society [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
South Africa’s Border War had profound implications for the social and political organisation of white society. Indeed, maintaining the credibility of South Africa’s presence in Namibia and the prosecution of the Border War was an important political ...

An Embodied Paper‐Based Microfluidic Al‐Air Battery for Enduring Untethered Insect‐Scale Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work presents a centimeter‐scale microfluidic aluminum–air battery (MFAAB) with dual‐surface anode and F−‐mediated byproduct decomposition. The design enables a high capacity of 2697.05 mAh/g Al and delivers tens of milliwatts to power LEDs, motors, and a toy car.

Semitrailer Steering Control for Improved Articulated Vehicle Manoeuvrability and Stability

open access: yesNonlinear Engineering, 2019
Articulated heavy vehicles have some specific performance limitations and safety risks due to their special dynamic characteristics. They show poor manoeuvrability at low speeds and may lose their stability in different manners at high speeds.

When the River Runs Low: Heterogeneous Impacts of Transportation Disruptions on Local Grain Basis

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A substantial share of U.S. soybean and corn exports from the Midwest moves by barge along the Mississippi River system to export terminals in the Louisiana Gulf. Transportation costs between Midwestern grain elevators and export terminals create a wedge between prices at these locations, and shocks to these costs are partially passed on to ...
