Trait variation driven by tree size more than environment and shows limited translation to species vital rates

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Functional traits are expected to predict vital rates and performance outcomes because they mediate how organisms interact with the environment. However, trait‐based models often have poor predictive power for tree species survival and growth.

MANOVA: Type I Error Rate Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) is most commonly used in the field of bio-statistics. Throughout this paper I conduct numerous simulations that help analyze how robust the MANOVA procedure is against its assumptions. Using Type I error rate

Invasive goldfish trigger a regime shift in experimental lake ecosystems of varying trophic state

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
The pet trade distributes exotic animals around the globe that enrich human lives. However, some pets become pests when released into the wild. This study provides experimental evidence that goldfish will negatively affect native freshwater organisms and ecosystems.

Geographic Patterns of Head Morphology in Syngnathus typhle Across Marine Regions

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Morphometric analysis of Syngnathus typhle head shape shows distinct geographic patterns across Baltic, North, Atlantic, and Mediterranean marine regions, driven by variation in snout length, head depth, and eye position. Findings provide a non‐invasive baseline for conservation monitoring.

Female‐Biased Sexual Size Dimorphism and Its Potential Causes in Hairy‐Winged Bats

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Based on the integration of molecular genetics, traditional and geometric morphology, and acoustic characteristics of hairy‐winged bats (a species that was historically misclassified into two species due to extreme craniodental divergence between the sexes) in multiple regions of China, we quantified the sexual size dimorphism (SSD) between males and ...

Global Variation in Timing of Allergenic Food Introduction for Food Allergy Prevention: An International Survey of Healthcare Professionals

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This study examines the current state of food allergy prevention guideline implementation worldwide, identifying key variables that may explain the observed global variation. Among 731 healthcare professionals across 80 countries, geography and clinical specialty independently drove allergenic food introduction practices, creating an 8.5‐month practice

Use of Generalized Inverse Matrices in Manova

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B: Statistical Methodology, 1970
Summary The concept of a generalized inverse matrix is used to derive the likelihood ratio statistic for testing a general estimable hypothesis in the multivariable linear model. The results, which are analogous to those in Searle (1965), are illustrated by considering the one-way model and the two-way model with one observation per cell.
