Statistical Equivalence Testing Approaches for Mantel–Haenszel DIF Analysis

Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2017
The null hypothesis test used in differential item functioning (DIF) detection tests for a subgroup difference in item-level performance—if the null hypothesis of “no DIF” is rejected, the item is flagged for DIF. Conversely, an item is kept in the test form if there is insufficient evidence of DIF.

The Power of the Mantel-Haenszel Test for Grouped Failure Time Data

Biometrics, 1993
The Mantel-Haenszel test for grouped failure time data (MHF test) compares the distribution of failure times in two cohorts followed for an interval of time when the data are collected in discrete subintervals. This paper derives approximations to the power of the Mantel-Haenszel test for arbitrary failure time distributions in the presence of ...

On the Asymptotic Relative Efficiency of the Mantel‐Haenszel Test

Biometrical Journal, 1987
AbstractThe Mantel‐Haenszel test is optimal when the odds ratio is constant. This paper investigates the effects of departures from the assumption of a constant odds ratio on the behavior of the Mantel‐Haenzel test. A simple approximation is proposed for the non‐null distribution of the test statistic.

Adjustments to the mantel–haenszel test for data from stratified multistage surveys

Statistics in Medicine, 1992
AbstractThe usual form of the Mantel–Haenszel test statistic assumes independent observations. This is inappropriate for data from a stratified multistage survey. Two alternative adjustments to the test statistic are developed to deal with this: (a) a modification of the effective sample size for each row of each table, using the design effects ...

Testing Hypotheses in Case-Control Studies-Equivalence of Mantel-Haenszel Statistics and Logit Score Tests

Biometrics, 1979
The two approaches in common use for the analysis of case-control studies are cross-classification by confounding variables, and modeling the logarithm of the odds ratio as a function of exposure and confounding variables. We show here that score statistics derived from the likelihood function in the latter approach are identical to the Mantel-Haenszel

Mantel-Haenszel-Type Tests for Testing Equivalence or More Than Equivalence in Comparative Clinical Trials

Biometrics, 1994
This paper proposes Mantel-Haenszel-type statistics for testing whether a new treatment is at least as effective as the standard treatment in comparative binomial trials. The null hypotheses considered are of a specified nonzero difference and of a ratio not equal to unity. It is shown that we may also use these tests for testing the equivalence of two

Variance Estimation for Differential Test Functioning Based on Mantel‐Haenszel Statistics

Journal of Educational Measurement, 1997
This article concerns the simultaneous assessment of DIF for a collection of test items. Rather than an average or sum in which positive and negative DIF may cancel, we propose an index that measures the variance of DIF on a test as an indicator of the degree to which different items show DIF in different directions. It is computed from standard Mantel‐

On the small-sample properties of the Mantel-Haenszel test for relative risk

Biometrika, 1974
SUMMARY For the analysis of combinations of 2 x 2 contingency tables Cochran (1954) and also Mantel & Haenszel (1959) proposed related statistics for the null hypothesis that the relative risk i/ has the value unity from table to table. Using the model with constant effects on a logistic scale of probabilities (e.g. Cox, 1970), this paper presents some
