Extrinsic and intrinsic musculature of the raptorial forelegs in Mantodea (Insecta) in the light of functionality and sexual dimorphism

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 284, Issue 6, June 2023., 2023
In Insecta, a “female‐biased sexual size dimorphism” (SSD) is commonly predominant. We analyzed the musculature of the raptorial forelegs in five species with varying SSD, using high‐resolution microcomputed tomography. We were able to confirm the presence of 15 extrinsic and 15 intrinsic muscles, and discussed muscle functionality and possible ...

Mate‐finding Allee effects can be exacerbated or relieved by sexual cannibalism

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 89, Issue 7, Page 1581-1592, July 2020., 2020
Using individual‐based models the authors have shown that sexual cannibalism can exacerbate the increases in extinction risk associated with reductions in population size and density. However, cannibalism can also promote population survival if it occurs after copulation.
