Abstract Celadonite is the most abundant K-rich hydrated mineral formed during basalt alteration. In convergent margins, celadonite from the altered oceanic crust sinks into the mantle and contributes to the mantle wedge metasomatism, recorded by incompatible element enrichment in lavas and mantle xenoliths samples from these settings.

Mantle metasomatism by ephemeral carbonatite melts

Recent experiments1 have shown that, at a range of upper-mantle temperatures and pressures, a carbonatite (carbonate-rich) melt occurs as a very small melt fraction in equilibrium with pargasite lherzolite. This melt has low water content and low TiO2 content, and will be extremely effective in transporting large-ion lithophile elements.

Examination of Fe3+ in metasomatized spinel peridotite xenoliths reveals new information about metasomatic redox processes. Composite xenoliths from Dish Hill, California possess remnants of magmatic dikes which were the sources of the silicate fluids responsible for metasomatism of the peridotite part of the same xenoliths.

Summary Mantle replenishment in lithophile elements has been discerned in the patterns of trace elements and isotopes in lavas. One replenishment process is identified as metasomatic replacement, seen in ultramafic xenoliths brought up in high-velocity alkaline eruptions.

Refractory rocks with light REE/heavy REE ratios greater than chondrite are common as xenoliths in basalts and kimberlites and are found in some oceanic peridotite massifs. This has led to the supposition that large parts of the upper mantle have been metasomatically altered by addition of light REE and other hyperfusible constituents.
