Using multiscale lidar to determine variation in canopy structure from African forest elephant trails

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 10, Issue 5, Page 655-667, October 2024.
Using two scales of airborne lidar, we determined variation in canopy structure from African forest elephant trails. Elephant trails in Lope National Park, Gabon, displayed lower canopy height, canopy cover, and different vertical distribution of plant mass.

Pre‐contact and post‐colonial ecological legacies shape Surinamese rainforests

open access: yesEcology, Volume 105, Issue 5, May 2024.
Abstract Disturbances in tropical forests can have long‐lasting ecological impacts, but their manifestations (ecological legacies) in modern forests are uncertain. Many Amazonian forests bear the mark of past soil modifications, species enrichments, and fire events, but the trajectories of ecological legacies from the pre‐contact or post‐colonial ...

How tightly linked are Pericopsis elata (Fabaceae) patches to anthropogenic disturbances in Southeastern Cameroon? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
While most past studies have emphasized the relationships between specific forest stands and edaphic factors, recent observations in Central African moist forests suggested that an increase of slash-and-burn agriculture since 3000–2000 BP (Before Present)

Testing the large genome constraint hypothesis in tropical rhizomatous herbs: life strategies, plant traits and habitat preferences in gingers

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 117, Issue 4, Page 1223-1238, February 2024.
SUMMARY Plant species with large genomes tend to be excluded from climatically more extreme environments with a shorter growing season. Species that occupy such environments are assumed to be under natural selection for more rapid growth and smaller genome size (GS). However, evidence for this is available only for temperate organisms.
