Marathon is a work of historiographic metafiction that seeks to shed light on the social and psychological ramifications of traumatic events and the art of storytelling itself. It is an extension of the war and terrorism novels that came before it and, to borrow a phrase from Anthony Kubiak's "Narrative Typologies of Terror," an act of terrorism itself:
