Botanical Gazette, 19421. Germination of the spores of Marattia sambucina and Macroglossum smithii results first in a plate and then in a mass. The gametophytes are dark green from the very first, but the old gametophytes may show a pale tissue in the midrib-which may contain a large amount of starch.
