Genetic inference of orchid colonization of a Costa Rican lava flow

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 55, Issue 6, Page 1195-1202, November 2023., 2023
A 1992 lava flow provides an excellent opportunity to study patterns of colonization and growth of plant populations on a naturally disturbed site. Plants with wind‐dispersed seeds, such as orchids, are often among the earliest colonists after habitat disturbance.

Genetic diversity and IUCN Red List status

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 4, August 2023., 2023
Abstract The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List is an important and widely used tool for conservation assessment. The IUCN uses information about a species’ range, population size, habitat quality and fragmentation levels, and trends in abundance to assess extinction risk.

Embracing Monogenic Parkinson's Disease: The MJFF Global Genetic PD Cohort

open access: yesMovement Disorders, Volume 38, Issue 2, Page 286-303, February 2023., 2023
Abstract Background As gene‐targeted therapies are increasingly being developed for Parkinson's disease (PD), identifying and characterizing carriers of specific genetic pathogenic variants is imperative. Only a small fraction of the estimated number of subjects with monogenic PD worldwide are currently represented in the literature and availability of

dartR v2: An accessible genetic analysis platform for conservation, ecology and agriculture

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 10, Page 2150-2158, October 2022., 2022
Abstract Innumerable approaches to analyse genetic data are now available to guide conservation, ecological and agricultural projects. However, streamlined and accessible tools are needed to bring these approaches within the reach of a broader user base.

Trust your guts? The effect of gut section on diet composition and impact of Mus musculus on islands using metabarcoding

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 3, March 2022., 2022
In this article, we assessed the differences in diet estimates and potential ecological and economic impact measurements according to the section of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small and large intestine) analysed. We aimed to test which section(s) provided a better diet representation and putative impact of a common inland invader.

Evolution of fruit and seed traits during almond naturalization

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 3, Page 686-699, March 2022., 2022
Almond naturalization is consistent with strong directional selection on fruits and seeds, leading to smaller and more toxic seeds encased in harder endocarps. Accordingly, we propose that feralization of this crop is, at least to some degree, driven by adaptive evolution of dispersal and recruitment traits.

Removing the bad apples: A simple bioinformatic method to improve loci‐recovery in de novo RADseq data for non‐model organisms

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 5, Page 805-817, May 2021., 2021
Abstract The restriction site‐associated DNA (RADseq) family of protocols involves digesting DNA and sequencing the region flanking the cut site, thus providing a cost and time‐efficient way for obtaining thousands of genomic markers. However, when working with non‐model taxa with few genomic resources, optimization of RADseq wet‐lab and bioinformatic ...

Evaluating surrogates of genetic diversity for conservation planning

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 2, Page 634-642, April 2021., 2021
Abstract Protected‐area systems should conserve intraspecific genetic diversity. Because genetic data require resources to obtain, several approaches have been proposed for generating plans for protected‐area systems (prioritizations) when genetic data are not available. Yet such surrogate‐based approaches remain poorly tested.
