Biofouling of Several Marine Diesel Fuels

2011
Abstract : The US Navy is facing exposure to new fuels that may behave differently in the marine environment, in comparison with high sulfur diesel. This laboratory work has investigated the effects of biofouling and seawater exposure to high sulfur diesel, ultralow sulfur diesel, synthetic diesel, biodiesel, and hydrotreated renewable diesel fuels ...

Marine biofouling: a sticky problem.

Biologist (London, England), 2002
Organisms that colonise underwater surfaces, such as barnacle larvae and spores of algae, use a diverse array of biological 'glues' to provide both temporary and more permanent adhesion. The practical consequence of colonisation by these organisms is biofouling - something that has plagued mariners for years - causing increased drag and, in extreme ...

Marine Biofouling of Synthetic and Metallic Screens

OCEANS 81, 1981
Biofouling of meshes can create serious problems in seawater intake or discharge systems, and in aquacultural applications, by reducing water flow and increasing drag forces and pressure drops. Biofouling tests on a number of different meshes in the size range of 1/4 to 1 1/2 in.

Marine Biofouling on Fish Farms and Its Remediation

2004
The fish farming industry suffers significantly from the effects of biofouling. The fouling of cages and netting, which is costly to remove, is detrimental to fish health and yield and can cause equipment failure. With rapid expansion of the aquaculture industry, coupled with the tightening of legislation on the use of antifouling biocides, the ...

Polymer brush coatings for combating marine biofouling

Progress in Polymer Science, 2014
Abstract A variety of functional polymer brushes and coatings have been developed for combating marine biofouling and biocorrosion with much less environmental impact than traditional biocides. This review summarizes recent developments in marine antifouling polymer brushes and coatings that are tethered to material surfaces and do not actively ...

Marine Biofouling in Vieques Sound, Puerto Rico

1969
Abstract : The Vieques Sound program is being conducted by exposing test panels at 50- and 95-foot depths in 100 feet of water. From April 1964 to February 1969, 103 panels were recovered and analyzed for fouling and boring organisms. Settlement of fouling larvae was found to occur throughout the year in Vieques Sound. The rate of fouling, however, was
