Estuarine benthic diversity declines with temperature across a tropical–temperate gradient
Estuarine benthic sediments are important habitats that support ecosystem health and productivity, but the drivers of large‐scale patterns in benthic diversity are not well documented. Using 18S amplicon sequencing of 425 sediment DNA samples from estuaries spanning 20° of latitude along Australia's east coast, we assessed tropical–temperate patterns ...

High‐Voltage Stability of LiCoO2 Cathode Materials Composited With Vanadium‐Based Glass Coatings
Vanadium‐based glasses show fluidity and good wettability toward other materials at low temperatures. The controlled precipitation of nanocrystals in vanadium‐based glasses enhances the material's mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. The VPFL coatings bond to the LiCoO2 interface via chemical bonds.

Biological interactions with Prochlorococcus: implications for the marine carbon cycle
Trends in MicrobiologyThe unicellular picocyanobacterium Prochlorococcus is the most abundant photoautotroph and contributes substantially to global CO2 fixation. In the vast euphotic zones of the open ocean, Prochlorococcus converts CO2 into organic compounds and supports diverse organisms, forming an intricate network of interactions that regulate the magnitude of carbon ...

Carbon cycle during the last 315,000 years: reconstruction from a marine carbon cycle model
Global and Planetary Change, 2002A vertical, one-dimensional marine carbon cycle model, including an atmospheric and a terrestrial biospheric reservoir, is developed. It is used to reconstruct the temporal variations of marine biogeochemical processes, the terrestrial biomass, and the vertical chemical structure during the last 315,000 years from records of the atmospheric carbon ...

The Marine Carbon Cycle and Ocean Carbon Inventories
2013Abstract Carbon is a fundamental component of all life and its gaseous form, carbon dioxide (CO2), is an important atmospheric regulator of Earth’s climate. Over societally relevant timescales, diverse physical, biological, and chemical processes in the global ocean have a very important role in controlling the exchanges of CO2 with the atmosphere ...

Chemical oceanography and the marine carbon cycle
Choice Reviews Online, 2008The principles of chemical oceanography provide insight into the processes regulating the marine carbon cycle. The text offers a background in chemical oceanography and a description of how chemical elements in seawater and ocean sediments are used as tracers of physical, biological, chemical and geological processes in the ocean.

Contribution of Fish to the Marine Inorganic Carbon Cycle
Science, 2009Oceanic production of calcium carbonate is conventionally attributed to marine plankton (coccolithophores and foraminifera). Here we report that marine fish produce precipitated carbonates within their intestines and excrete these at high rates. When combined with estimates of global fish biomass, this suggests that marine fish contribute 3 to 15% of ...
