Comparison of Approaches to Management of Large Marine Areas [PDF]
In order to learn more about the different approaches to managing large-scale marine areas, their comparative merits, and the synergies and overlaps between them, Conservation International (CI) commissioned this independent analysis of several widely ...

ABSTRACT Basal and standard metabolic rate (BMR and SMR) are cornerstones of physiological ecology and are assumed to be relatively fixed intrinsic properties of organisms that represent the minimum energy required to sustain life. However, this assumption is conceptually flawed. Many core maintenance processes underlying SMR are temporally partitioned

Protecting the Pacific Important Pieces of the Regional Conservation Puzzle [PDF]
The Pacific, Earth's largest ocean, is a complex ecosystem that supports life both at sea and on shore. Protecting this biodiversity is vital, which is why The Pew Charitable Trusts takes a comprehensive approach to ocean conservation in the Pacific ...

Geological processes shaping freshwater biodiversity: a synthesis of global evidence
ABSTRACT Recent genomic data highlight the key roles of geological processes in shaping the diversification and biogeography of freshwater lineages. Specifically, physical processes such as tectonic uplift, erosion, glaciation, lake formation, and sea‐level fluctuation contribute extensively to the evolution of biotic diversity within and among ...

Subterranean environments contribute to three‐quarters of classified ecosystem services
ABSTRACT Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well‐being.

The influence of rivers on seabird foraging ecology
ABSTRACT Rivers act as vital arteries to the world's oceans, delivering fresh water and nutrients that sustain marine ecosystems. Globally, river flow increasingly is being altered by climate change and anthropogenic pressures; yet the significance of rivers to predatory marine species, such as seabirds, and the extent to which river‐related changes ...

From Ecosystem Threats to Balance Sheets: Biodiversity Risks Exposure and Corporate Cash Policies
ABSTRACT This study investigates how firms strategically respond to biodiversity risk by examining their cash holding decisions. Using firm‐level data from China, we find that firm‐level biodiversity risk exposure significantly increases corporate cash holdings.
