Sources of plastic marine debris on beaches of Korea: More from the ocean than the land [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Reduction of marine debris requires knowledge of its sources. Sources of plastic marine debris found on six beaches of Korea were estimated. Samples larger than 25 mm were collected from 10 quadrats of 5 x 5 m for each beach in spring 2013. The total 752

Upper bound limit analysis of coral reef limestone cavern roof stability incorporating a tension‐shear failure mechanism with tensile‐strength cut‐off

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
For the roof of coral reef limestone caverns, a novel tension‐shear composite failure mechanism was developed. The most critical tensile crack model was identified using a hybrid optimization algorithm, and the stability of the cavern roof was analyzed accordingly.

Meiofaunal biofouling on the marine plastic debris washed ashore in pollution-hot-spots of Korea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
We investigated the abundance and species composition of meiofaunal biofouling (40-1,000 µm) attached on the marine plastic debris (MPD), in order to understand relationship between characteristics of the biofouling and polymer types of the plastic as ...

The 2025 Kamchatka Earthquake and Tsunami: Cascading Impacts and Risks to Japan

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT On July 29th, 2025, a large earthquake (Mw 8.8) occurred near the Kamchatka Peninsula. This event caused a tsunami that reached Japan's Pacific coast, even though the source was far away. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of earthquakes and tsunamis and discuss how they relate to the recurrence possibility and risk in Japan.

Immunomodulatory Effect of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Scale Gelatin Peptides in RAW264.7 Macrophages and Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Currently, small‐molecular‐weight collagen peptides are a research hotspot in functional factor development due to their high bioavailability and diverse bioactivities. In this study, gelatin was extracted from tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) scales by hot water extraction, followed by pepsin hydrolysis and ultrafiltration to obtain the < 3 ...
