Marine heatwaves cause intense coral bleaching in Lakshadeep: Researchers Deccan Herald dated 6th May 2024 [PDF]
The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has found that coral reefs in the Lakshadweep Sea have undergone severe bleaching due to prolonged marine heatwaves since October 2023.

Field in the frame: flying over the Ocean
Marine heatwaves threaten vulnerable ecosystems and are intrinsically linked to a warming climate. Dr Athanase and colleagues performed coupled climate model simulations and found that future climate change could create a feedback loop, increasing the ...

ABSTRACT Microplastic (MP) pollution is widely recognized as an emerging environmental threat. Yet, most studies still rely on controlled experimental conditions that poorly reflect environmental complexity, potentially underestimating risks under realistic scenarios, particularly during short‐term exposures. Here, we tested whether acute oral exposure

Using Structure‐from‐Motion photogrammetry in a longitudinal study, we show that although coral reef habitat complexity had declined significantly by the end of the most prolonged tropical marine heatwave on record, no further losses were detected and 3 years later the reef had begun to recover this critical ecosystem function.

Marine heatwaves cause intense coral bleaching in Lakshadweep: Researchers Millennium Post dated 7th May 2024 [PDF]
In an alarming situation, the researchers of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) have recorded a widespread bleaching event impacting the coral reefs in the Lakshadweep Sea owing to marine heatwaves.

Strong impact of tropical cyclones on the genesis of subsurface marine heatwaves
Subsurface marine heatwaves are newly recognized extreme ocean events with profound impacts on global marine ecosystems. Previous studies have linked their formation to downwelling favorable surface winds, warm ocean eddies, and planetary waves, yet ...
