How Pastoral Are Pastoral Landscapes? Scavenger Assemblage Structure in Human‐Dominated Landscapes: A Case Study From Mediterranean Pastures

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
An in situ field experiment accompanied by camera trapping has shown how pastoralism as a land use affects carrion preferences and species interactions among facultative scavengers. ABSTRACT Pastoralism is one of the most common land uses worldwide and has been a fundamental part of Mediterranean ecosystems for thousands of years.

From Leaves to Litter: Use of Anthropogenic Nesting Materials in Hibernation Nests of the European Hedgehog

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
This article presents the first detailed description of anthropogenic materials, including plastics, being incorporated into the hibernation nests of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus). While such behavior is well documented in birds, it has been underreported in terrestrial mammals—likely due to difficulties accessing mammalian nests ...

Spatiotemporal Variation of Ecological Quality in the Yinshan Mountains Detected by MODIS Remote Sensing Indicators

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
A comprehensive ecological index MRSEI based on MODIS was proposed. The new indicators of greenness, humidity, and dryness are more applicable to the ecological evaluation of the desertification steppes. The introduction of comprehensive salinity index can effectively reflect the issue of soil salinization. FROM‐TO vector transformation can effectively

Divergent Nutrient Resorption Strategies in C4 Desert Shrubs: Stoichiometric Evidence From Assimilative Branches

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
We assessed interspecific differences in nutrient resorption efficiencies (N, P, K) of assimilative branches in three Calligonum species from the Junggar Desert. The results revealed distinct nutrient resorption strategies and scaling relationships among species, closely linked to both internal nutrient status and environmental factors.
